The Bow Christmas Tree Trend in 2023

The holiday season is here! We are decorating and getting ready for friends and family gatherings soon. I am so excited because entertaining at home is one of my favourite things! I love using Pinterest, Instagram and Tiktok for home decor inspo and I have been loving one trend in particular lately.

This year, the cutest trend has taken over our Christmas decorating – bows! Inspired by a wave of creativity on social media, bows have proven to be the most perfect, pretty ornament for Christmas trees, adorning the drinking glasses of guests, tying up napkins and of course, tied onto each present under the bow-covered tree.

I have added some bows to my Christmas tree this year and I am obsessed. I decided to go with just six, white, silky, soft looking bows with long ribbons for a little bit of drama.

I did take a little shortcut with my bow decorating though and I ordered these bows to get them up quickly and have them all matching perfectly. My secret tip is that I bought six silky hair bows! They have clips on the back so they'll stay in place and they can be re-worn as hair bows after christmas or for decorating another time - we love a multi-purpose item and in my eyes, it’s a reusable slay.

Next year I might have them on the tree again, or attach them to a garland, a wreath or wear one in my hair. Actually, these would be so cute at a hens party or in my bridal wardrobe too.

If you’re making your own bows, it’s a great personal touch to add to your decorating. I love the look of silky bows or velvet bows, I’m not a huge fan of the burlap fabric but it does look like it would hold well because it’s a rougher material. I’ll be adding some of my own handmade bows around the house and on this year's gifts.

I loved this article from New York Post, “Gen Z's Take: Bows Instead of Christmas Ornaments”. It talks about how there’s been a shift in Christmas tree decorating habits this year, highlighting how Gen Z is breaking away from traditional ornaments. Bows have become the preferred choice for younger generations, reflecting a desire for simplicity, minimalism, and an eco-friendly approach. They also write a bit about the cultural implications of this shift and the impact on the holiday aesthetic too.

Even Apartment Therapy wrote about the bow phenomenon! I have loved seeing so many people embrace the trend, especially one that’s reasonably easy and accessible to a lot of people. There’s something that’s feminine and fun about it that I just can’t put my finger on. I get so happy when I see my Christmas tree bows.

In 2023, the Christmas tree bows trend is hopefully going to be more than just another social media trend. From traditional bright red Christmas bows to contemporary silky and long ribbon bows, they’re a stylish alternative to the usual traditional ornaments.

Whether inspired by timeless elegance, a desire for a modern, minimalist aesthetic, or you’re a maximalist with bows in all sizes and colours, incorporating bows into holiday decor is a fun and creative way to celebrate the season. I hope you can find a way to include bows for your festive season!
